Product Information

Ludwig van Beethoven - 3 Equali for Four Trombones

Beethoven's only original work in the original key for trombone quartet has been arranged by Denis Wick for a traditional quartet of alto, tenor and bass trombones. This three movement work is short but serious and shows Beethoven's genius with glorious choral writing for the instrument.

Equali were works written for equal, or similar, instruments; in the eighteenth century they were almost always used for funeral services and usually employed a quartet of trombones.

When Beethoven visited the director of music at the cathedral in Linz, Franz Xaver Glöggl, in autumn 1812, the latter asked his guest to "compose socalled Equali for 4 trombones for All Souls' Day [2 November 1812]". Beethoven readily complied - and it was to be his own funeral music. For in 1827 the two of the Equali were sung in an arrangement for male choir as a "dirge for Beethoven's funeral procession".

The original instrumental version is today a core work in the trombonist's repertoire. This edition is based on the musical text in the Beethoven Complete Edition and contains a score and single parts.

This piece was also famously played at the funeral of British Prime Minister Benjamin Disraeli at St Pauls Cathedral.
