Product Information

"The Blue Bird" by Charles Villiers Stanford Op.119 No.3

arranged for Brass Quintet by Rupert Whitehead

Charles Stanford's 'The Blue Bird' requires sensitive playing to balance the dynamics between each of the parts. However, when performed carefully it is one of the most beautiful yet simple pieces available in the repertoire. One similarity to the Magnificat is the way the piece is structured with the sopranos carrying a sort of solo line, whilst the rest of the choir moves mostly together and as an accompaniment. The harmonies in this piece are extremely cathartic, and are a perfect representation of the words, which are taken from a poem written by British poet: Mary Coleridge. This arrangement for brass quintet is straightforward to play. It could form a contrasting peaceful interlude between more energetic music in a typical brass quintet recital programme.

Rupert Whitehead is a trombonist freelancing and teaching in London. Several of his brass quintet arrangements have been developed and since performing them with his group, Concentus Brass Ensemble, and are published on this website.

A brass recording of this piece will be provided by Concentus Brass Ensemble soon. Meanwhile the choral version is provided below to enable you to preview the piece.
